How much microcement do I need per m²?

Microcement goes on in several thin coats, so the consumption per m² depends on the number of coats and the product's consumption. Here's the rule of thumb.

Quick answer

A complete microcement system typically uses 3–4.5 kg/m² across 2 base coats and 2 finish coats. As a rule of thumb, plan for about 1 kg/m² per coat. Add primer (about 0.2 L/m²) and sealer on top.

How that works out

Consumption = area × number of coats × kg per m² per coat. With 4 coats at 1 kg/m² per coat that's about 4 kg/m².

Base coats use more material than finish coats, so the real figure depends on the specific product. Always look up consumption on the datasheet and use it in the calculator.

Remember primer first (so the material bonds) and 2 sealer coats at the end (so the surface becomes water- and wear-resistant). They're part of the system and belong on the shopping list.

Example: a 7.5 m² floor

A 3 × 2.5 m floor is 7.5 m². With 4 coats at 1 kg/m² per coat that's 30 kg, plus 10 % waste = about 33 kg – so 3 bags of 15 kg. Plus about 1.5 L of primer and 1.5 L of sealer.

Common mistakes

  • Using a random consumption instead of the figure from your product's datasheet – it varies a lot between brands.
  • Skipping primer or sealer – without them microcement won't bond or last.
  • Applying microcement over a substrate that moves or cracks – cracks telegraph through the surface.
  • Assuming microcement is waterproof on its own – wet rooms need an approved waterproofing system underneath.

Frequently asked questions

How many kg of microcement per m²?

Typically 3–4.5 kg/m² for a full system with 2 base coats and 2 finish coats. Always check the datasheet – the figure varies between brands.

How many coats do I need?

Most systems are 2 base + 2 finish coats = 4, plus primer and sealer.

Can I apply microcement over tiles?

Yes, if the tiles are firmly fixed and the joints are filled flush so the surface is flat and free of movement.

Is microcement waterproof?

Not on its own. In wet rooms an approved waterproofing system must sit under the microcement, and the surface must be properly sealed.
