How many drywall sheets do you need per m²?

A standard drywall sheet measures 1200 × 2400 mm and covers 2.88 m². That means one sheet covers just under 3 m² of wall or ceiling.

900 × 2400 mm2.16 m²approx. 0.46 sheets/m²
1200 × 2400 mm2.88 m²approx. 0.35 sheets/m²
1200 × 2700 mm3.24 m²approx. 0.31 sheets/m²
1200 × 3000 mm3.60 m²approx. 0.28 sheets/m²

In practice you count in whole sheets and round up — you can't buy half a sheet.

Example: 12 m² wall

A wall measuring 4 × 3 metres gives 12 m². With standard drywall sheets (1200 × 2400 mm) the calculation looks like this:

Wall area4 × 3 = 12 m²
Sheet area1.2 × 2.4 = 2.88 m²
Sheets (raw)⌈12 ÷ 2.88⌉ = 5 sheets
With 10% wasteapprox. 5–6 sheets

Don't forget waste and cutting

Drywall sheets need to be cut around power outlets, windows, door frames and corners. The offcuts can rarely be reused completely, so there will always be waste.

  • 10% — most walls and ceilings with normal cutouts
  • 15% — many outlets, pipes, sloped walls or dormers

1 layer or 2 layers?

For most interior walls and ceilings, 1 layer of drywall is sufficient. However, there are situations where 2 layers are necessary:

  • Fire protection — building codes may require 2 layers to achieve the necessary fire resistance
  • Sound insulation — 2 layers of drywall significantly reduce sound transmission between rooms
  • Extra strength — load-bearing walls for heavy shelves or cabinets

With 2 layers you simply double the number of sheets, screws and joint compound. The calculator handles this automatically.
