How many tiles do you need per m²?

The number of tiles per m² depends primarily on the tile size. As a rule of thumb:

30 × 30 cmapprox. 11 tiles/m²
30 × 60 cmapprox. 5–6 tiles/m²
60 × 60 cmapprox. 3 tiles/m²

These figures exclude grout joints and waste. With joints and waste you should typically add 5–10%.

How to calculate it

The formula is straightforward: divide 1 m² (10,000 cm²) by the tile area in cm². Remember to account for the grout width, which is typically 2–5 mm.

Floor area12 m² (4 × 3 m)
Tile size60 × 60 cm
Tile area3,600 cm²
Tiles per m²10,000 ÷ 3,600 ≈ 2.8 → 3 pcs
Tiles for 12 m²12 × 3 = 36 tiles
With 10% wasteapprox. 40 tiles

Common tile sizes and tiles per m²

The table below shows the most popular tile sizes and the approximate number of tiles per m² — excluding grout joints.

Tile sizeTiles per m²
10 × 10 cm(Mosaic)100
15 × 15 cmapprox. 44
20 × 20 cm25
30 × 30 cmapprox. 11
30 × 60 cmapprox. 5.6
40 × 40 cmapprox. 6.3
60 × 60 cmapprox. 2.8
60 × 120 cmapprox. 1.4

Don't forget waste and cutting

Regardless of tile size, you should always add extra for waste. Tiles can break, need cutting along edges, around pipes and corners — and sometimes the pattern doesn't align perfectly.

  • 5% — simple rectangular room, large tiles, straight layout
  • 10% — most rooms, many corners and cuts
  • 15% — diagonal layout, many niches, irregular rooms

It's always cheaper to buy a few extra than to come up short and risk the colour batch being discontinued.
